It's covered provided that the insurance company said "You're covered", or "You'll be covered from midday" when He phoned to change His policy details.

Quite simply, if he rang his insurers when picking up the new car and told them of the change then yes, he is covered. If he didn't ring them until after the crash then he isn't covered as the old car would be the one insured under the policy at the time of the crash.

Each policy wording is different but in general a car insurance policy usually covers one named driver to drive a particular car identified in the insurance policy.Your uncle's policy may be different but (again in general) the insurers may not cover the new car if they did not know about it.A simple phone call will clarify this.

OOPS he is notthe first or the last to do this. It is possible that he may be covered by two insurances and they will share it out between themselves.
1 a say seven day one from the dealer which gives him that period to get his insurance details and policy in order.
2. His own insurance as well if he did.
His best bet is to talk to his insurance company,
It maybe of some consolation to know I saw a driver in a brand new car driving out of the garage on his first drive and hitting a passing car. He had hit the accelerator instead of the brake

I'm confused. Is it your car or your uncle's car you're asking about?
Are you saying that your uncle bought a new car and then crashed it, and you're not sure whether he had transferred the insurance from his old car to his new car? He's the only one who would know whether he had done that or not -- and the only people who can tell him for sure whether he is covered for that accident would be his insurance company. He'd better check with them.

His insurance should cover his vehicle, but it may not cover the entire value if it is totalled. For example, if he purchased the car for $10,000 and trade in value is only $8,000- they will only cover $8,000.
Of course it also depends on the type of insurance he had. But he shouldn't have been able to drive off the car lot without adding his new car to the insurance. If he did, they can refuse to cover it if he didn't have the proper policy in place. If he just had liability coverage, they won't cover any car he was driving, just the other property that was damaged.
