You would have to check with your insurance company. I dont see why it wouldnt.
US car insurance does not cover you in Mexico. There are lots of insurance agencies on the US side of the border selling Mexican insurance. Usually you can get a pro-rated refund if you return before the expiration date. They sell it for short amounts of time, and long.
You should definitely get Mexican insurance because if you are at fault in an accident and have no coverage, you will go to jail.
After Mexico is Guatemala, and I don’t know the situation there, or for the countries beyond.
Not under the standard auto policy.
Here in the USA, the auto policy only covers you, in the USA, Canada, and USA territory & posessions – like Puerto Rico, or the US Virgin Islands.
It’s remotely possible to add coverage for every country you have to drive through, to get to El Salvador, but hardly anyone wants to insure a vehicle going into Mexico for theft – because it’s pretty likely to get stolen.
It depends on who your car insurance provider is, not all countries will recognize your car insurance coverage if you do get into a vehicle mishap there. Also, not all insurance policies will have provisions to cover you if you are outside the U.S (and other applicable territories.)
Some big insurers like GEICO or Farmers would probably have overseas affiliates to take care of your car insurance coverage needs. I would recommend you ask your carrier immediately to find out if they have affiliates on the countries you’ll be passing to reach El Salvador. Check out the article I referenced below so you can get a better idea about overseas car insurance coverage.
Hope this helps!
